Octavia's breaths quickened as she realized what he was planning to do, but she walked up and held on tightly all the same.
"I can't wait," she whispered, heart thumping slightly as she grinned widely. It had been a while since she had this much fun.
*****
The foals' ears folded back as they hung their heads.
"Sorry, Ms. Frost."
Lieutenant Warm Heart chuckled, then looked seriously at the adults. "I need everypony to stick together as soon as we exit the cave. There's going to be wind and snow, and getting lost is a death sentence, as you've no doubt found out by now. Move quickly, but carefully. We don't want to accidentally step on an Ice Drake's tail. Or any creature's tail, if we can help it. If there's an emergency, let us handle it. Now move!"
She turned and saluted to Frost and Aldorn. "Lead the way, miss, sir."

Frost took to the air once they left the cave. She wanted a birds eye view, so she could spot any trouble coming and give ample warning. "I will cover our tops and keep my eyes and ears pealed. Aldorn, why don't you lead on the ground? This way we will have ample warning for any danger."

Asterian smiled and held Octavia close to him as kicked off the ground and flipped a lever at the same time, sending the couple hurtling up the shaft. The speed never ceased as they ascended twenty, forty, one hundred feet, finally slowing down after some one hundred fifty feet. The shaft led outwards to a small corridor—the stairwell to the tower that Asterian had been at earlier in the day.
He leapt off, leaving the rappelling-ratchet to the rope and setting Octavia down gently as he motioned for her to come up the steps.
He lowered his hood and took in the view once more...

Aldorn takes both of his heating units and attach them together. He goes to the far end, away from the group and unsheathes his sword. "Ignitus." The sword transforms into the fire sword and he puts it close to the heating unit. The heater absorbs the heat from the sword and recharges to its full strength in a matter of seconds. "Aldorn." The fire sword transforms back into its original form. He sheathes the sword and separates the heating units again. He goes up to the middle of the group and attaches the first half of the heating unit and lets it share the heat with the rest of the group. Aldorn attaches the other half to his gear.
He goes ahead of the group, with is rifle and sword ready. He turns his head at them. "Come on, we don't have all day. We may not know when they might come back and finish what they started." He seems to have agreed with Frost and have taken lead.

The soldiers nodded and trudged onwards.
Fortunately for the group, there were no further delays. In short time, the great mountain face of Orod Khazad loomed before them, the impenetrable gateway to Duchy Fancy towering to unguessable heights, guarded by the ever-watchful gaze of the gold-armored statue on the pedestal between it and the world abroad. One of the figures on the door seemed to BLINK, then speak with a loud voice over the snow.
"Captain Swift Blade! Lieutenant Warm Heart! Is that you? If so, please input the pass-phrase!"
The griffon pushed his way through the herd of shuddering ponies to the gateway, and exhaustedly pounded the glowing runes in sequence. There was a pause, and then suddenly the massive doors opened, welcoming the ponies with a blast of warm air.
The Commander was already waiting for them in Duchy armor and breathing mask.
"Quickly, quickly! Welcome to Duchy Fancy, Fillies and Gentlecolts. Please, in an orderly manner. No pushing or shoving. That's the spirit. No no, wait over there by the barracks. Yes, that building. You're very welcome, little one. Yes, there will be food. Ah, Ms. Frost, Mr. Aldorn. Welcome back, sir, ma'am. I cannot thank you enough for bringing these survivors to us."
*****
The musician carefully made her way up, then gasped as she saw the magnificent view.
"A.... amazing...." she whispered, looking all about. "I never realized..."

Asterian never broke his gaze from the view as he explained, "This is where I come when I feel like reflecting on things... or just when I need a view." He looked over to a wooden beam that jutted out about five feet from the tower. He approached it, climbing over the edge to position himself onto the beam. He shifted his way to the very edge, where we crouched down and watched. He stayed there, vigilant and watchful as a sentinel, yet calm and composed as still water.

Frost, as soon as she enters, dives into the nearby snow. She isn't use to the heat anymore and reacts before it would cause her to fall unconscious again. She says from the snow, "It is good to be back. Hope ya don't mind, am going to have a snow bath before going further in. I am still not use to the transition from cold to heat yet. It will take a few weeks of going out then coming back in for me to get use to the transition to prevent future cold to heat blackouts. Please make sure to find them a good place to stay, preferably away from the others till they can adjust. Some have had it worse then the others. Once I am adjusted, I will need to talk with you about something else we found while searching for them. One more thing there is an ice drake in the area. So I might want to warn you about sending out others, unless they are equipped to melt ice and pierce scale armor. I have located a weak spot on the creature. It could give the other travelers an advantage when venturing outside the city." Frost relaxes in the snow letting herself adjust to the heat.
((All cold based abilities are now at 25% strength. weaknesses are still at 100% strength. Need a few more times of going into the cold and back into the heat before the weaknesses can begin to reduce and the cold strength loss to be nullified.))

Aldorn removes his mask once he made it inside. He uncovered the hood of his coat, revealing his head. He takes the heating unit from the fillies and reunites it with his heater. He takes off the heater from his gear and sets it into his pack. He looks at Frost for a second, then begins to think of something. He looks at the Commander before speaking. "Is there a blacksmith's forge around here, as well as a lab? I would like access to those two, and it may help us later on." He looks at Frost. "I'll join you with the... debriefing once I am done."

Frost nods from within the snow. It takes her about 15 minutes to adjust before she comes out of the snow. Her frost armor is completely gone now, revealing her snow white coat and icy blue main and tail. It also reveals that her main and tail are longer then when she is in her frost armor. Her cutie mark is now visible for all to see. It depicts a blizzard of pure ice and snow blocking sight of all but some pony shapes.
she looks to the guards and says, "Once they are secure and eating right, I will give my side of the debriefing. Also I could use some warm food and a nice hot spring bath, if you happen to have one?"

Octavia's heart leaped to her chest and she let out a small cry of worry as Asterian walked onto the ledge.
"B-be careful!"
*****
The commander nodded. "There is just about every amenity there is to ask for, actually," he grinned at Aldorn. "You'll see once we get you all through to the city proper. This here is just the entrance hall."
He turned to Frost. "All available down in the city. Actually, if we're all ready, let's head there now. Oh, and you're all invited to a welcoming luncheon down at Coffee Joe's cafe later. First, the barracks."
Lieutenant Warm Heart saluted at the commander's implied orders, and began herding the new Guests to the barracks. "You all know how to read and write? No? That's fine, no, really, it's fine, we'll help you out. You all have names, don't you? All right then! Here, everypony, one form each. No, don't eat it! You'll get lots to eat later, I promise. Here, you know how to write, sir? All right. Who here needs help?"
She came over to Frost and Aldorn with papers. "Will either of you be staying here at the Duchy, after we've gone and looked for..." she mimed the note that Fluttershy had left behind.

Asterian looked back for a split second, a small smile spreading across his face. "Don't worry, my dear. I have done this plenty of times... How do you think I get across town so quickly?" he remarked with a small laugh.
He then held out his hoof, inviting the mare to join him on the beam. "Come, Octavia. The view is much better out here." Knowing her reaction would be one of dread, he tried to convince her.
"The ground is beneath you and the sky aids your balance. The beam is only as narrow as you claim it to be, and I am here to catch you... Unless, of course, you would partake in a little bet?"

Frost nods and says, "As long as the roof can be open to the sky, yea. I would love to stay. It gives me the chance to get this dang fire weakness to go away, without reducing the effectiveness of my cold abilities. I might even call this place home, once we solve the problems of why this is happening. After the hot spring bath, I think a look at the library would be a good start. Find out what she could have meant by, go back to the beginning and your history is the key."
Frost fills out the paper work with the grace of a well known writer and the speed of a flyer. She gives all needed info and a few tidbits that weren't included on the blank side for extra reference. When she talks a bit about her family history, she mentions the famous writer of the Daring Doo series as an ancestor of hers. She also puts down what skills she has including sky smith skills training and aerobatic training. She puts down more for the aerobatic training then the smith training. One thing about the smith training that is mentioned, she can make anything a regular smith can but from a material called Sky Metal. She also puts that her skills in flight are both weather pony class and what was once called wonderbolt class, but the wonderbolt class is very vague in what she knows. It seams she is hiding something on that note. Once she finishes her paper work, she hooves it over for them to look at and says, "So may I ask, what is this paper work is for anyways? Why do we have to fill it out? Also, where and when do you want to do the debriefing?"

Aldorn fills out the paperwork and gives it back. "I will stay until I am needed elsewhere. For now, I will head towards the forge and finish my friend's research. I will help Frost with this riddle once I am done." Aldorn heads into the underground city to find a blacksmith forge and a lab.

Frost says, "The questions can be answered at the debriefing. Right now I need that hot spring bath. See y'all later. Kids, do behave yourselves and be well. Also you adults really need to make sure you get yourselves together, ok?"
With that frost bolts to the location of the Hot Spring Bath. Making sure to get directions to it first.

Octavia gulped, them blushed beet-red and made a face, steeling herself as she tentatively stepped onto the ledge. She wobbled a bit, and let out the most adorable and embarrassing squeak as she overcompensated and found herself hugging Asterian as tightly as a wedded wife. Despite feeling embarrassed enough to just let gravity take her, she held onto the stallion for dear life.
"I, *squee*, d-don't..."
The noise she made was reminiscent of Fluttershy's odd vocalization after being asked her name for the third time by Twilight.
*****
The ponies stepped past the barracks... and beheld the awesome vastness of the underground realm of Duchy Fancy.
This cavern alone was vaster than most minds could dream, deep enough that cirrus clouds formed near the roof and the Sun-Crystals' light refracts into a blue sky that covers the ceiling, wide enough that an entire city complete with suburbs and skyscrapers and parks and forests fit comfortably within, branching out into vaster and vaster caverns, each lit with blazing light as bright as the Sun and Moon at different times of the day.
It's mid-morning on a mild summer day down here in the stone cities, and somepony over at weather control decided to turn up the temperature and let the warm air from the Hall of Fire fill up the rest of the place. It's pleasant, and there wasn't such a thing as "too warm" unless you were right next to a forge or kiln, or a magma river. Birds were singing in the parks and gardens, little chicks, kids and foals going to and fro, playing hide-and-seek among the grand columns of the Merchant's Hall and trying to keep their mind off the fact that school starts again in a month.
Morning actually does shimmer, seeing as that the stored sunlight from the Sun-Crystals up in the far reaches of the massive cavern light up all the polished angles of the stone and crystal buildings, and the tiles underhoof. In smaller places like Gemton and Rockton, you might see the mayor giving a speech, and everywhere you went you could always find merchants and artisans, street hawkers, street cleaners and errand-colts rushing past with "very important" messages. The occasional odd pet.
Nobles were likely relaxing in their grand marble mansions, or surveying their vast estates while having tea and crumpets served to them on platinum platters. Most other ponies had "real jobs" to do, but life was actually rather relaxed around here, with plenty of spare time for hobbies and the odd "adventure" through a park-forest.
Many citizens had completely forgotten that there ever was such a thing as "above-ground". The foals, kids and chicks certainly had no comprehension of that place, only rumors of some sort of death world if you dug or wandered too far up or down, filled with either ice or magma. The magma, at least, they could understand and see. Nopony WANTED to see the Ice. To them, this was the universe, an endless series of tunnels and caverns to explore, work, and live in, and occasionally discover and colonize when they grew up. Equestria was an ancient civilization from what for all they knew was a million years ago, the sort of thing you read about in a boring history book and forgot. Oceans, stars, grassland, beaches, deserts, all these were pretty pictures on a wall, or strange and exotic places you heard about in old stories and sad songs that always seemed to make the adults cry when they listened or sang.
There were more blacksmith shops than even Aldorn knew what to do with, going all up and down Smith Street and smiths of different metals branching out to the sides - goldsmiths, silversmiths, ironsmiths, steelworkers, mithril workers, and more, all specializing in various intricacies in the fine art of smithing. There were sword shops, helmet shops, horseshoe shops, shops for silverware and nuts and bolts, department stores with all sorts of metal pieces for sale, even supercenters that sold everything from instant noodles to bicycles.
As for baths, there were thousands along Spa Street, massage parlors, steam rooms, bubble baths, hair salons, hoof salons, mud baths, and more. Just a block over were feminine care products, beauty stores, boutiques, fashion stores, everything a mare or beauty-minded stallion could ask for. And indeed, the denizens of the city did ask indeed, in large quantities - despite the sheer number of stores, there was an even larger number of customers. After all, Duke Fancy had essentially welcomed ALL creatures willing to follow the law into the insanely vast premade cities, no matter what race or background, and all meant ALL. Ponies, deer, goats, zebras, diamond dogs and more trotted and pranced here and there, some with children, others alone. It was an entire world in itself, held up by ingenious architectural techniques pioneered by Duke Fancy's great-grandfather, grandfather and father, as well as their enormous Pants Foundations and Triple Crown Industries.
And all this was just the business and living spaces of Orod Khazad; even more chambers could be seen to all sides, from mines and factories and refineries deep below to gardens and orchards, to parklands and forests, all created through the seemingly infinite wealth that had belonged to the Pants family and generously spent by the possibly paranoid and possibly insane Fancy the Second in an attempt to build a sort of "ark" large enough to house all of Canterlot and the surrounding lands.
From what the ponies heard, there were even MORE underground cities now, after the population boom that occurred a few years ago. Each of these enormous population centers were linked by grand tunnels and hallways with multiple levels of roads and walkways and rails for quick transportation. Of course, since this still was underground and enclosed, the Duchy could not afford to burn coal for all its energy needs, and so most of the factories and trains down here were ingeniously fitted with electrically driven engines that could be connected to the Duchy's electrical grid, powered by the great geothermal generators that fed on the heat of the planet itself deep below the foundations of the settlement.
