"The honor is all mine," Candycane replied with a reassuring smile as she forced her mind to take everything the grey farmpony said backwards. "I am amazed that you've kept your heart true and your head on straight after the endless horrors I'm sure you've faced... I've had a vision about you. The way you hold onto hope inspires me to do the same." The grey mare gave the ghost of a smile. " Ah'm hopeful 'bout everythin', th' whole situation with Master an' all. But ain't nopony need t' inspire nothin' in ponies. Might as well not be me. Otherwise, Ah'd end up a whole lot better n' Dash, all happy n' excited all th' time." Guru Fido patted her gently, causing a slight flinch reflex before she relaxed. " That's why we're here. Fate has brought us here, in this time, for a reason. We'll save her also, and all the Elements, and defeat Discord." The pony onlygave a fake smile at that. " Eeyup, it'll be easy. Hop in, hop out, bright shiny rainbows an' friendship, nice n' peaceful, no fightin' at all, an' everythin'll be 'xactly like before, like nothin' ever happened, all th' dead ponies back t' life, an' we'll all hold hooves an' sing Kumbaya 'round a campfire." The diamond dog sighed, shaking his head. " None of us ever believed the journey would be simple, old friend. But we will do what we must, and at the very least, it will be a better situation than what we have." She chuckled grimly. " Nah, it won't be." The farmpony bowed her head in thanks for the food, and ate sparingly, though she did tear up quite a bit at the taste of real apple pie. She finished quickly, as if she didn't want to take up too much time, but before she could excuse herself, the Queen stood up gracefully. " We would be honored if you could spend the night with us, friend." The pony lowered her head. " Ah deserves it." Queen Cadence smiled. " I offer it freely, friend. Deserving has nothing to do with the matter." The grey mare's face scrunched up. " Ah, uh, gotta check in with Master, He's waitin' fer us up at Chaos Castle, an' there's stuff t' do, Ah can't..." She stopped when the rest of the room simultaneously raised one eyebrow, and sighed. " Y'all lose, Ah'm goin'." The alicorn smiled and nodded. " I shall show you to your rooms later, then." She looked at Candycane, Moonlight and Sandstone to see if they had finished eating, or if there was something they wanted to ask of the Element of Dishonesty or Herself before adjourning. Many changes had come in the day so far, and many more, she sensed, would come throughout the rest of the day and into the night, and the Wheel of Fate turned, but before any of that, there was ample time for conversation. She had, after all, promised discussion and an explanation and answer to any questions the ponies might be asking, and with an Element of Chaos here at Her table, the equivalent of a library of knowledge was at Her guests' hooves for the moment.

Making sure she wasn't interrupting anypony, Candycane spoke up. "I haven't thought to ask yet, but... what is the range of Harmony in the way we intend to use it against Discord? And how difficult do you suppose it will be to reach that range once we have everypony needed?"

And how difficult do you suppose it will be to reach that range once we have everypony needed?" " Theoretically infinite in purging range, and line-of-sight directed range, as far as is currently understood," replied the Queen. " Unfortunately, there is a charging time of up to ten seconds, during which the process can be interrupted, and of course the process cannot begin without the presence of all the Elements at once, in one location. Thus far, the Elements of Harmony have only functioned when the target was distracted or otherwise inattentive, which will be... difficult in a head-on charge, especially if the Enemy takes the threat seriously. If He decides to do so, He can instantly violate any mortal mind and twist it into a vile parody of itself, at any time. That we still exist as we are may be mere coincidence." " Master's here, not in Neighpon on 'vacation' with His 'daughter'." " Ah. That explains the lull in chaotic activity, and how you were able to safely come here."

"And I don't suppose it's possible to sneak up on a demigod," Candycane sighed. "I hope somepony else has a plan for that, because I'm drawing blanks... I guess my job is to help bring the Elements together for now, but they keep coming to us without me doing anything. Truth be told, I feel kinda like a fifth wagon wheel," she said, rubbing the back of her head. "I've only repeated what I saw in a vision, which could appear to anypony, and I'm pretty sure I'm not one of the Elements. Am I really able to make a difference?"

"I've only repeated what I saw in a vision, which could appear to anypony, and I'm pretty sure I'm not one of the Elements. Am I really able to make a difference?" Guru Fido smiled. " We but mirror the world. All the tendencies present in the outer world are to be found in the world of our body. If you can change yourself, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a pony changes her own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards her. This is the sacred mystery supreme. A wonderful thing it is, and the source of great happiness. You need not wait to see what others do. Change yourself, to change the present. Change the present, to change the future. In making your choice to come, you inspired Lady Sandstone to also stand and fight. By your visions and Lady Sandstone's prophecy, you enlightened Lady Apple Pie to the miracle of Laughter's choice.” The grey mare's eyes widened at this, as she turned and looked at the Queen, then at Candycane. " A-Apple... Pie? Laughter?"

Candycane nodded at Applejack's shaded self. "Yes, I don't know what all it entails, but without a doubt she has the element of laughter. ...It took a lot of suffering to reach that point, though," she whispered softly, looking down as she recalled the bodies. "I hope the other elements aren't so costly..." She shook her head and rested her forehead on a hoof. "...but if we're not willing to lose anything, we'll never get anywhere... I definitely won't be helpful if I think like that... I just don't want anypony else to..."

I definitely won't be helpful if I think like that... I just don't want anypony else to..." The grey mare looked like she was in shock. Candycane remembered then; that very morning, the Element of Dishonesty had been there, with all the other Six Minions, slaughtering the very ponies whose bodies she'd seen. And the very same was standing before her. It was little wonder that the mare felt the guilt and weight of the world upon her shoulders; she had to witness ponies who, according to Guru Fido, had been her best friends, embodiments of Harmony, bring forth the merciless will of her dread "Master". Even if she took no part in it herself, and did all she could to help rather than harm, simply being part of the group of chaos-twisted psychopaths, enthralled to the will of the Enemy, was impossible to imagine for a moment, let alone a thousand years. But Guru Fido only reached out and touched Candycane's hoof with a paw. " Many sorrows must come to pass for salvation to come, as a mare must experience the agony of childbirth to bring forth a foal. Yet, because of your choice, I know that you are strong, strong enough to continue walking this path you have chosen. And I know that you shall soon attain another victory, if you simply lay the seeds of thought to bloom into action," he smiled, looking pointedly between her and the grey mare. Liarjack the "Kind"? What if...?

Candycane found an excuse to smile a little, in spite of the grim topic she'd brought up. "Well, I suppose one thing I'm good at is planting seeds," she chuckled lightly. "Speaking of which," she said, turning to Liarjack again, "you were in my vision as well. That was a beautiful thing you did for those fillies... Your mercy stood out like a beacon in my vision. Your... kind heart. Don't you think your relative could use a bit of that kind family support standing with her against Discord?" she asked with a wink, beginning to get the idea that Saint Liarjack the Kind didn't already comprehend the significance of her own title. Maybe she just needed a little hint?

Don't you think your relative could use a bit of that kind family support standing with her against Discord?" she asked with a wink, beginning to get the idea that Saint Liarjack the Kind didn't already comprehend the significance of her own title. Maybe she just needed a little hint? The grey mare shook her head, clutching her stetson to her chest. " Ah ain't no monster, Ah'm a hero, a saint. Everythin' good Ah've done outweighs th' bad." She went silent, eyes far away. " Applebloom..." " You gave your sister the kindest, most inspiring of ends, old friend." " But it was all th' truth!" " It WAS the truth. You simply do not see how true those words will become in time," smiled the diamond dog. She wiped her eyes, sighing. " It'll happen soon, an' we'll all be happy an' everythin' bad'll go away, th' dead'll come back t' life, an' a li'l filly'll lead us." Sandstone suddenly spoke up. "Auntie, even tho' ya think it's a lie, that there what ya said, it's true. We'll win, an' sooner than ya think! Th' dead'll come back t' life, an' in a good way, not like Big Banana's zombies, not even like Saint Applebloom, but for real. A filly'll lead us. Ah jes' know it's true! Maybe yer gonna even see yer sis soon, an' see a LOT more'n that too, enough t' make ya see what Ah sees! This world's 'bout t' experience somethin' like never b'fore, an' you'll help us do it! A filly that Laughs in th' face o' sufferin', a mare who's Kind even in despair, a Friend tired o' tragedy, a Loyal mother who won't stop walkin' fer her daughter, a Generous dragon who'll stay by his foster parent's side, an Honest lady tired o' lies. It's like a Wheel, an' at th' end, we'll end somethin' that's been goin' on too long, an' even save th' Big Banana from Himself, changin' hearts, changin' minds, savin' souls." The grey mare stood up, knocking over her own chair and backing up into a corner of the room as the filly spoke, flinching as her words continued. Sparks of orange color, like fire, flickered at the near edge of her coat, and the words seemed to shake the world, just as they did last night with the first prophecy, though Sandstone didn't notice. Guru Fido and Queen Cadence were calm with the peace of a thousand years of practice. Lord Thorax's eyes were wide as his carapace seemed to glow even brighter with rainbow light which pulsed with each word. The Element of Dishonesty, however, was quaking, partially in pain, partially in sheer terror, and tears were streaming down her face as she whispered something.

Candycane stood up and stepped a little closer to Liarjack... not encroaching on her corner, but at the forefront of her attention beside Sandstone. "This world can, and will, change. It already started when Apple Pie discovered her element... The sooner we awaken each element, the sooner the world's suffering will end; if my vision was any indicator of the way things are, and you'll know this even better than I do--time is measured in lives lost as long as that banana guy's in power." The candy mare recalled the way her vision began... The alicorn, half-flesh, half-bronze... atop an ancient cog. "The gears have begun turning," she smiled earnestly, looking into Liarjack's eyes as her own twinkled with genuine hope. "It's really happening now!" she said, more with excitement than urgency. "Wouldn't you like to come with us and be a part of it? I'm sure the prophecies have great significance, especially with the way they line up so well with my vision, but they might just be guidelines to help ponies seek the salvation the world so desperately needs... you have a choice. If you bring your kindness to bear against the chaos, you'll save a lot more time that would have been spent seeking another Kindness... ...you'll save a lot more lives." She slowly stepped closer and gently embraced the farmpony, whispering in her ear... "...you have the power to undo everything you regret."

That was the line at which the farmpony gently pushed Candycane away, shaking her head. " Undo everythin'? Shore, that kin happen. Bring back Applebloom, make all them dead ponies alive again, make th' last thousand years never happen. Shore ain't what Master promised Dash." She sighed, putting her stetson back on and bowing to the Queen. " No thanks t' you fer th' food, stingy witch. Ah'll be stayin', fer now. Straight home t' Master, not out in th' gardens. Ain't need no time t' think." The Queen nodded with understanding. " We're always here for you, old friend." The mare gave something resembling a smile, and disappeared out the doorway, heading for the gardens. Guru Fido shook his head. " That mare is so enmeshed in lies, she even believes the greatest lie of all, that there is no hope for redemption. But perhaps..." "...Ah understands it all now." Eyes turned to Sandstone as she stared into nothingness. "Her sister. Kindness. A tunnel. A vision. The Mirror. The Truth. The Darkness. The Father." She turned and grabbed Candycane. "Ya hafta help her! Follow her, but don't interfere 'till it's time. It's slippin' away..." Changeling guards rushed forwards and caught the staggering filly, and Guru Fido turned to the mare. " Your part may be greater than we thought, Lady Candycane. Go after the Element of Dishonesty. See what it is that Lady Sandstone has prophesied. If it is what I think it is, we may be on the verge of another victory. All we need now is to watch and assist, and One greater than we could even imagine will bring forth a miracle not seen since ancient times."

Candycane stammered. "Sister? Tunnel vision? Dark mirror of truth? I... I'll do what I can, but I don't know what any of that means...!" She looked worriedly at Sandstone as she backed towards the doorway Liarjack left through. "Um... stay... safe?" she asked uncertainly, feeling torn in half about leaving her compromised like that... but the filly had far more qualified ponies there to help her, and she'd just given Candycane a task. Rather urgent, from the sound of it. Hopefully the "time" would make itself pretty apparent when it came... as well as what she should do. "I'll... find out what I need to do," she said reassuringly, steeling herself to figure it out. She left the royal dining hall and took to following St. Liarjack to the gardens. She wasn't sure if "don't interfere" meant "don't let her know you're following..." For the moment, she tried to follow at a concealed distance, supposing Fate would reveal her to the grey mare if she wasn't meant to remain unseen.

She wasn't sure if "don't interfere" meant "don't let her know you're following..." For the moment, she tried to follow at a concealed distance, supposing Fate would reveal her to the grey mare if she wasn't meant to remain unseen. As she followed the grey mare into the depths of the gardens of Avalon, mists seemed to form above the deep pools where Luna's last stars lay, giving an ethereal, dreamlike quality to the place. For a brief instant, so brief it might have just been her imagination, Candycane thought she saw a light flash from beyond the sky, beyond space and time, but when she looked, there was only fog. The deep scent of pine and cedar and willow wafted through the warm breeze, and dancing lights played at the edge of her vision, just out of focus. The mare in front of her didn't seem to notice until they both heard a sound, like a giggling filly, echoing and ephemeral. " ...Applebloom?" The giggling got louder, and the vague image of a little yellow-coated filly with a red mane and bow seemed to flicker just beyond sight, a whimsical skeleton painted on her features. " Come on Applejack! Are ya old or somethin'? Catch me if ya can!" The mare stared for a moment, then charged forward, orange seeping into the grey of her coat. " Come on Applebloom! Get back here little filly! And whatcha doin' coverin' yerself with glow in the dark paint like that! Granny Smith is gonna give ya such a whoppin'!" " Come and try ta catch me!" the glowing little filly laughed as she skipped along the increasingly foggy and maze-like paths of the gardens. She stuck her tongue out at the orange-grey mare before running off again. " Lalalala-lalala!" " Leave the singin' ta Sweetie Belle, Apple Bloom! Now stay still, tarnation!" " Ya said stay still, so ya must mean ya want me ta move faster!" " Ah ain't lyin'!" " So that meant ya are lyin'!" The filly just kept laughing, leading them deeper and deeper into the fog, towards the very heart of the gardens, where a circle of cedars stood in the spitting image of Ponehenge.

Candycane was extremely confused by what she saw... and even moreso by the fact that she saw it. Wasn't this a relative of... Applejack? Wouldn't such a vision only appear to her, and not Candycane? What a strange world... and... for once, she couldn't tell if the grey--well, previously grey--mare was even lying. Could she be truthful when there was nopony around? Still without any hint as to what she was meant to do, Candycane swallowed her uncertainty and kept pace with the farmpony, maintaining her distance.

Ah shook mah head. Ah couldn't shake the feelin' Ah was forgettin' somethin' important. She smiled at me and stuck her tongue out like me all sassy like, like she had earned every cutie mark in the world! She must have been usin' soundproof shoes cause she didn't make a sound as she skipped right through a tree. Ah mean, RIGHT through a tree, like it wasn't even there, and stuck her head through it a tic' later and asked if I was comin' or not. I galloped after her head first with Pa's hat and slammed flat against it. She find some o' that intangibility potion from Zecora's hut again? Yeah, Ah know what intangible is ya dork! All the time Ah spend with Rarigreed Ah picked up a lotta fancy words.
After a thousand years of being almost constantly with her, Ah really finally see what she sees in them fancy dresses and fancy words Aunt and Uncle Orange tried teachin' me as she plays with her 'family.'
By my words, your beauty, your dictation, they tell a pony a million things about you before you even engage them in proper conversation darling.
But Ah can't be that Applejack, Ah'm 'bout the only thing that keeps TD kinda sane, and keeps Rarigreed from turnin' inta another Angry Pie and Spike ... Ah want good old Spike to have somethin' that helps remind 'em that precious year we had together, against the thousand we've had since then. It makes them happy. Who cares if it's a lie?
Finally trying to get hold of 'Bloom leads me ta some sorta gallery. Reminds me o' THAT gallery. The one with Sparkler Hooves dancin' whenever anyone tells her to, the Princesses, one of the hundred copies of the vase Philomena's ashes were made into, and some statues that are just statues just to spice things up.
" What's the matter big sister? Come on!" Applebloom hopped up and down in the middle of the room smiling.
Dang. What was Ah forgettin'? It was drivin' me crazy! It had to do with 'Bloom. But Mah head felt fuzzy when Ah tried to think 'bout it! Dang it! Gotta catch 'Bloom!
"Alright 'Bloom, this is just too far." She waggles her tail and vanishes into the mist, movin' towards those big trees. There's a soft pain in mah chest, I wonder what that's about. Somethin' 'bout this whole place feelin' mighty wrong!
" Over here big sister! Ah promise not ta move away from this here spot!" The ghost, it was definitely some kind of ghost, was standing directly in the middle of the circle of ceders. There was something nagging in the back of Candycane's mind, something about a pool or a mirror. " Applebloom! Now yer gonna tell me what this here's all 'bout right NOW!" The filly stopped, turning to the mare with a sad look on her face. " Big sister, Ah just wanna say first, thanks fer everything, and Ah love ya very much, and always will, and Ah'm sorry 'bout this next part." There was silence for a moment, then the mare's eyes shot open wide. " WAIT A SEC'! Ah remember now! Applebloom! YER DEAD!" The ghost flickered, and was suddenly standing right in front of the grey mare, grabbing her by the mane. " Big sister, welcome to The Truth." SHE PUSHED ME IN! Ah fall, it's just a moment but- splash down. Ah see the sky, and 'Bloom looking down at me... Ah sink like a rock. It burns. Ah'm on fire! It hurts! It's in mah ears, it's in mah eyes, in mah nose, up mah, ugh! In mah mouth, in mah t-hroat-stop it! Ah don't want anything to do with you anymore!!!! ALL YOU'VE EVER DONE IS HURT PONIES! It's in Mah veins! It's killin' me!The glade was dead silent as the grey mare vanished into the silvery liquid of the Truth, which showed all things, past, present, future. The spirit of Saint Applebloom, the Heart-Healer, Savior of Sunnytown, the Last Blank, flickered and reappeared directly in front of Candycane, and the mare saw that the skeletal figure wasn't paint. Sad, but hopeful eyes looked deep into her own. " The Father wants t' speak with you, too, Candycane. Ah'm sorry it has t' be this way, but believe it or not, ye're crucial t' makin' this work. It's only a moment." How had they-? The Truth was directly beneath the mare. Somehow, she hadn't fallen in yet, but... " Ah'll give you one question t' ask me b'fore we start," said the former replacement Element of Kindness.
